Bilingualism and Internationalisation in Higher Education

SCIENTIFIC REPORT – Justification and general event description:

The 1st edition of the LLACI Research Seminars (LLACI – ReSe) is a multidisciplinary event principally aimed at the teaching staff at the University of Cádiz. The idea is to create a transfer and innovation forum for researchers, teachers, administrators and academics to share experiences and knowledge, and to which UCA students are also invited to contribute.

The main objective of this event is to heighten awareness of the need to introduce effective ways of integrating foreign languages ​​and internationalisation in Higher Education. In an international work context, developing the ability to work in multicultural and multilingual teams is key for students who are preparing to search for employment. This event aims to address the needs of internationalisation of the university curriculum. Scientists and stakeholders who intervene in one way or another in the design and implementation of study plans in Higher Education need access to forums of debate where they can discuss and share good practices.

The event will follow a hybrid format, that is, you can participate both in person and online. In this way, the aim is to promote the transfer of knowledge and the exchange of ideas in an international environment, since the teaching staff of the members of the SEA-EU alliance (European Universities of the Seas) will be invited to attend. Doctorate and Master’s students are particularly welcome to attend.

The event, which will take place from 18-27 October 2023, is organised by the Research Group “Languages ​​and Applied Linguistics in International Contexts” (LLACI, HUM-1033). The following main topics will be covered:

• Multilingualism as a formula for promoting internationalisation.
• Integrated Learning of Contents and Foreign Languages ​​at the university.
• Internationalisation at home.
• International mobility in Higher Education.
• The internationalisation of the curriculum.
• Language learning and its accreditation.
• The design of joint international curricula.

 

MEMORIA CIENTÍFICA – Justificación y descriptor general del evento:

La 1ª edición de los Seminarios de Investigación LLACI Research Seminars (LLACI – ReSe) pretende cubrir un evento multidisciplinar principalmente dirigido al profesorado de la Universidad de Cádiz, en el que investigadores, docentes, gestores y académicos en general podrán compartir experiencias y conocimiento en este foro de trasferencia e innovación, al que también se invitará a participar al estudiantado UCA.

El objetivo principal de este evento es visibilizar la importancia de la implementación de fórmulas de integración de las lenguas extranjeras y de internacionalización en la Educación Superior. En un contexto laboral internacional, el desarrollo de la capacidad de trabajar en equipos multiculturales y multilingües es clave para el alumnado que se está preparando para la búsqueda de empleo. Este evento pretende atender las necesidades de internacionalización del curriculum universitario. Los científicos y stakeholders que intervienen de una manera u otra sobre el diseño e implantación de los planes de estudio en Educación Superior deben poder encontrar foros de debate donde compartir buenas prácticas.

El evento tendrá un formato híbrido, es decir, que se podrá participar en modalidad tanto presencial como online. De esta manera, se pretende fomentar la transferencia de conocimiento y el intercambio de ideas en un entorno internacional, pues se invitará a asistir al profesorado de las Universidades enmarcadas en la alianza SEA-EU (European Universities of the Seas, Universidad de los Mares).  También se invitará a estudiantes de Doctorado y Máster que puedan estar interesados.

El Grupo de Investigación “Lenguas y Lingüística Aplicada en Contextos Internacionales” (LLACI, HUM-1033) presenta estos primeros Seminarios de Investigación LLACI Research Seminars (LLACI – ReSe) que tendrán lugar los días 18 al 27 de octubre de 2023 en los cuales se tratarán los siguientes temas principales:

• El plurilingüismo como fórmula de fomento de la internacionalización.
• El Aprendizaje Integrado de Contenidos y Lenguas Extranjeras en la universidad.
• La internacionalización en casa.
• La movilidad internacional en la Educación Superior.
• La internacionalización del curriculum.
• El aprendizaje de idiomas y su acreditación.
• El diseño de planes de estudios internacionales conjuntos.

Research group CV summary

Languages ​​and Applied Linguistics in International Contexts (LALIC) is an interdisciplinary and international research group based at the University of Cádiz (UCA) made up of applied linguists, phoneticians, pragmatists, psychologists and sociolinguists who work in the field of innovative applications and uses of linguistics and languages ​​in international contexts. The group initially arose from a research and development project on the standardization of the English oral test, in which several group members have a working interest. This developped and broadened to meet the need to provide solutions to the challenges posed to society in the current international and digital context. The group’s main research area therefore falls within applied linguistics, with a particular focus on linguistic knowledge transfer to the digital society with applicability within the fields of language learning and testing, university linguistic policy, the internationalisation and multilingualism of society or the integration of people with special needs or in contexts of limited technology.

The group’s current research lines revolve around four main areas:

• Methodological and technological innovation in second language teaching and testing.
• University linguistic policy in the CEFR and internationalisation.
• English in the international context.
• Bilingualism and multilingualism

The international team, with members from various countries, is composed of three PhDs and five PhD students, each member with a different function. The two main researchers, Bárbara Eizaga Rebollar and David Levey, are University Professors with extensive research and university teaching experience. Both have been main researchers in a Research and Development Project of the Spanish Education Ministry. The third PhD in the group, Candela Contero Urgal, has more than 10 years teaching experience and has participated in various research projects at the UCA and was a member of an Excellence Project of the Junta de Andalucía. The five Ph.D. students in the group (Cristina Heras – UCA research fellow-, Salim Abderrazak, José Miguel Campuzano, Fco. José Coto Lobato and Víctor Ramírez Rivas also have valuable experience, both professionally and academically, in their respective fields of research, and their training and experience abroad brings richness and transversality to the group.

• English as a lingua franca (ELF), English as an international language (EIL), English for specific purposes (ESP) and for academic purposes (EAP).

• Innovation in teaching methodologies and evaluation instruments in second languages.
• Pragmatic competence in the teaching and evaluation of second languages.

Participation mode

The LLACI-ReSe 2023 Research Seminars have been planned to accommodate both PDI and students as follows:

1. For teachers and researchers:

The programme is of considerable interest for researchers and teachers and the last two sessions have been organised with them in mind. A hybrid format option is offered, taking into account the following:

 

1. UCA members are encouraged  to participate in a face-to-face capacity, as the aim of these practical seminars is to facilitate and encourage personal contact and dialogue. 
2. Non-UCA International teaching staff belonging to institutions outside Spain, in particular, members of the SEA-EU alliance, will be able to follow the sessions online. In this way, it is hoped that the seminars reach a wider audience, enabling knowledge with those who cannot travel to  the event. The aim is also to promote contact and collaboration  between researchers from different international universities. In the same way, and given that the LLACI research group has international researchers, the object is to spread and share ideas with the partner universities and those researchers who may be interested in the subject.

2.For students:
UCA students will be able to participate in person.

The sessions for the first two days have been timetabled for Wednesdays 12.00-15.00, coinciding with “Miércoles de Letras”, a time slot specifically dedicated to extra-curricular activities in the Arts Faculty when students do not have classes.

These seminars are open to students on different courses and studying at different Faculties. Initial preference will be given to UCA Master’s and Doctorate students.

Modo de participación.

Los Seminarios de Investigación LLACI-ReSe 2023 se han planificado para dar cabida tanto a PDI como a estudiantes de la siguiente forma:

1. Para docentes e investigadores:

El programa tiene un alto interés para investigadores y docentes, por ello, se establecen dos días en particular (las dos últimas sesiones) especialmente destinados para ellos. El evento se ofrecerá en formato híbrido para el PDI, teniendo en cuenta lo siguiente:

1. El profesorado UCA podrá participar en formato presencial, pues se trata de facilitar e incentivar con ello el diálogo y el carácter práctico de los seminarios.
2. El profesorado internacional (esto es, no vinculado de forma contractual con la UCA sino con una institución de fuera del entorno nacional), en particular, el perteneciente a la alianza SEA-EU, podrá seguir las jornadas en formato online. Con ello, se pretende que los seminarios cuenten con un mayor alcance, no sólo local sino también internacional. Además, se fomenta la transferencia del conocimiento sin necesidad de realizar movilidades para poder participar en el evento. Se pretende fomentar igualmente el contacto y las posibles compatibilidades entre los investigadores de diferentes universidades internacionales. Asimismo, y dado que el grupo de investigación LLACI cuenta con investigadores internacionales, se dará difusión en las universidades socias para acercar el evento a investigadores que puedan estar interesados en la materia.

2 Para estudiantes:
Los estudiantes UCA podrán participar en modo presencial.

En concreto, las dos primeras jornadas se han planificado en miércoles entre las 12.00 y las 15.00 al objeto de que el programa coincida con los Miércoles de Letras, espacio ubicado en esa franja horaria todos los miércoles para la participación de los estudiantes de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras en actividades fuera del aula, por lo que la organización del evento se asegura de que no haya docencia planificada en ese momento de la semana.

Se fomentará la participación de alumnado de diferente perfil y procedente de diferentes titulaciones y centros de la UCA. Se ofrecerá en primera instancia al estudiantado de Máster y Doctorado de la Universidad de Cádiz. También podrá ofrecerse a otros estudiantes UCA interesados.

Teaching, Transfer and Innovation

Interest for teaching, transfer and innovation:

This event aims to create an environment in which the 26th and 27th are particularly aimed at researchers, teachers and managers interested in the integration of foreign languages ​​in university teaching.

Given the need to advance the processes of internationalisation of teaching, and specifically, in the implementation of bilingual and multilingual programs that meet the demand of society, this activity aims to be beneficial not only from a scientific perspective, but also for the teacher and the university teaching manager.

Thus, for the PDI UCA the main seminars of these two days will be offered as a training activity in “Implementation of bilingualism plans in Higher Education”.

 

Interés para la enseñanza, la transferencia y la innovación:

Este evento pretende crear un entorno en el cual los días 26 y 27 vayan particularmente dirigidos tanto a investigadores, como docentes y gestores interesados en la integración de lenguas extranjeras en la docencia universitaria.

Dada la necesidad de avanzar en los procesos de internacionalización de la docencia, y en concreto, en la puesta en marcha de programas bilingües y plurilingües que atienda la demanda de la sociedad, esta actividad pretende ser beneficiosa no sólo desde una perspectiva científica, sino también para el docente y el gestor de docencia universitaria.

Así pues, para el PDI UCA los seminarios principales de estas dos jornadas se ofrecerá como actividad formativa en “Implementación de los planes de bilingüismo en Educación Superior”
